Knowledge Base: What is "cache"?

When using LabelEd there are usually two main types of cache in effect.

System Cache

The System cache stores some of your frequently loaded data, such as items and categories and static versions of some of the dynamic pages generated by your site in order to improve performance, helping to reduce the time it takes for pages to load.

If you have recently made lots of updates to your content then it is possible that your sites system cache can become stale. Usually pages are cached for a very short amount of time (a few seconds), however this time can increase depending on how busy your site is at any given time.

If you believe that your cache has become out of date then you can press the 'Clear Cache' button in the 'Cache management' section of the administration area and the cache will then be rebuilt automatically.

Browser Cache

All modern browsers (by default) store local copies of assets such as images, stylesheets and Javascript. They do this so that the assets do not need to be re-downloaded for each page view, this reduces the bandwidth required and so speeds up your overall browsing experience.

Sometimes if updates have been made to either the administration system or to your site's front-end, your browser may still try to use it's cached files instead of the new, updated files. This can usually be rectified by simply refreshing any page that is not displayed correctly. If this doesn't help, please see the article on manually clearing your browser's cache.
